JOB DETAILS

The Preschool at Shanghai Centre is a small, privately-run, international school. It offers a bi-lingual environment with mixed aged groups and emphasis on both academic learning as well as personal autonomy and social interaction.

We are conveniently located within the Shanghai Centre complex in downtown Jing’an district, adjacent to the Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel and just a few blocks from the Jing´an Temple stop on subway Line 2.

The Preschool currently offers the following classes:
• Caterpillar program: 1.5 to 2.5 years old (9-11:30am)
• Butterfly half-day program: 2.5 to 5 years old (9am-12pm)
• Butterfly full-day program: 2.5 to 5 years old (9am-3pm)

We are currently seeking a qualified "lead teacher” to run the Butterfly full-day class. The lead teacher will conduct the classes in English, with support from an assistant Chinese teacher and school ayi.

Students are primarily children of Shanghai Centre residents, and each class may have a range of different nationalities and language abilities, though the largest percentage of students are Americans from the US. Class sizes are kept small (8-12 students) to best facilitate close engagement amongst teachers and students.

The Preschool has been operating for over 20 years and provides a stable infrastructure for its teachers. It is clean, well-maintained, with high-quality facilities. There is a monthly budget for class materials, field trips, and any additional equipment required. It is a community-based environment and enjoys a high degree of parental support via the School Board (Parents´ Committee).

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should be caring, creative, full of energy, and have a positive attitude. You should be able to partner together well with the other teachers and be highly self-directed. You have the opportunity to structure your curriculum and teaching methods to best benefit the needs of the students.

Native English speakers are preferred and prior preschool or kindergarten teaching experience plus university degree in Education required. Excellent organization and communication skills expected.

The ideal candidate will also have some conversational-level Mandarin ability (though not required), and should be a current resident in Shanghai with plans to remain living here for at least the next 2-3 years.

We offer a competitive salary with a 10 month contract, tied to the school calendar (mid-August through mid-June). 30+ days’ paid holiday plus additional personal/sick leave are included in the compensation. Holiday schedule is similar to that of other international schools in Shanghai and include both the official Chinese holidays plus Christmas (Winter) holiday.

Contract can be renewed yearly, upon review by the Parents’ Committee (School Board).

Please submit an updated resume/CV and letters of recommendation(s) if available. Pending screening, we will contact you to come visit the school for an in-person interview. We look forward to meeting you!
