School Vision / Ethos: This is a Christian school with many people groups and faiths in its community. It is a Private Secondary School within the Macau Government network. The school emphasises integration, creativity, thinking and problem solving skills. It is an English medium school but students study Chinese every day and also study one of French or Portuguese. There is an art room, 3 science labs, a language lab, library, ICT lab as well as classrooms. The school hall and rooftop provide space for sport activities. The school is pleasantly situated on the island of Taipa, down the road from the University of Macao Library. The design of the school is architecturally very attractive. It has two large playgrounds, one on the ground floor and one on the roof. The roof playground is specially designed for sports activities. It has its own library, computer suite, music room, art room and science room.
Regional Overview: Macau is a former Portuguese colony off the coast of China and very close to Hong Kong. It is known as the "Las Vegas" of China with a huge number of Casinos. It is also a popular tourist destination and is afforded a year round warm climate.
Qualifications
Requirements: The schools preference is for teachers with at least 2 years of experience. They will take teachers with a degree + PGCE but they do prefer those with 4 years Education Degrees (such as a BEd). Teachers must have a degree in their teaching area as well as a teaching qualification (and experience) for that subject. Teachers must be under 55 and have a love of learning and children, a willingness to be involved with extra- curricular activities, be a team player willing to ´go the extra mile´ and be creative and innovative with a good sense of humour. They prefer single teachers or teaching couples without dependents (It is very difficult to get permission from the Macau Government to bring children in on a parent´s work visa unless the person can prove a very high income or other assets abroad). Being an Anglican school, they do prefer to hire Christian teachers but this is not essential as long as there is empathy and respect for the school´s religion and ethos.
Salary and Benefits
Package: Salaries from about US$2500 to about $3300 per month; Heads of departments receive an additional small payment of approximately $150 per month; Macau has probably one of the lowest taxes in the world; Teachers contribute to the provident fund (employee pays 5% and this is matched by the school); Teachers are given an allowance each month and rent their own flats. The allowance is about US$800 per month for single and US$1000 for family; Utility allowance is given. Single teachers receive about $65 per month and shared about $125 per month; Most flats are within walking distance; Medical Insurance; One return flight to home country per year; Bonus of one month´s income at the end of the contract; 7 weeks of holiday time within the school year and minimum of 5 weeks in the summer break (generally 6 or 7 weeks).
