Dynamic EFL teachers required to teach mostly Omani nationals in Muscat. Classes involve General and occasional ESP English using published course books. Teachers need to be enthusiastic about teaching all levels, including lower ones as a large percentage of our students come to us with little knowledge of the language.
Contact teaching hours: up to maximum of 26 hours per week. This may involve split shifts and some off-site work (transportation allowance is provided for this). The working week is Sunday - Thursday. Evening classes run from Sunday to Wednesday as most students prefer to return to their villages at weekends, involving long travelling times. Morning classes run 5 days per week. Any teacher who works more than 26 hours, receives overtime paid along with salary.
Although most of our General English classes run in the evenings (4.00-6.30pm and 6.30-9.00 pm), 4 days a week, we now face more demand for morning and lunchtime classes. Together with the possibility of morning classes (sometimes offsite), this MAY mean that teachers have to work split shifts at times - but this is not always the case!
Qualifications:
- Minimum qualifications is either the CELTA or the Trinity TESOL.
- Minimum 2-3 years’ experience required AFTER obtaining the teaching qualification.
- All applicants also need to enjoy teaching grammar classes as this is a requirement of our students.
- Full mastery of English across all 4 skills to CEFR C2/IELTS band 9 required.
Please also note that owing to restrictions set by the ministry responsible for approving teachers, they will not accept a BSc / BCom / LLB / etc. holder unless there is a recognised EFL qualification and a minimum of 2 yrs experience after obtaining that EFL qualification. Owing to the layout and facilities in Muscat, it is essential that all teachers have a valid driving licence and are willing to either purchase or hire a vehicle. Public transport is sporadic and it can be very uncomfortable trying to hail a taxi in the heat and humidity of summer.
Salary: Gross salary per month is 800-850 OMR. Salary is dependant on qualifications.
The package: Teachers will be provided with fully furnished accommodation. This may involve sharing accommodation as single flats are very difficult to locate. If the teacher is already in Oman and accommodation is not to be provided by Polyglot, a monthly allowance of RO200/- is paid as part of the salary. Medical cover is available for all teachers at a reputable private clinic in Oman. This medical cover does not include long term health issues, pregnancy, optical or dental care. Flights to and from Oman will be provided by the institute. Holiday entitlement: The school is open throughout the year so there are no set holidays except for religious and national holidays that are announced shortly before they happen. Teachers are eligible for all these holidays - as per Omani Labour Law. In addition to this, teachers are entitled to 3 calendar days for each month they have completed. This amounts to 36 calendar days per year - usually taken in a couple of blocks. Holidays need to fit in with the teacher’s classes and he/she will need to discuss possible dates with the DOS before arranging anything.
