JOB DETAILS

Raffles American School (RAS) aims to inspire pedagogical change across Asia by combining research-driven approaches with teacher-inspired implementation strategies. We are a truly student-centered school, which sets us apart from schools that teach to the test and laud rote memorization from textbooks.

Each student at RAS is encouraged to find their own path, utilizing their individual intelligences. Teachers are expected to nurture this process by creating an inspirational and supportive learning environment. RAS administration, encourages the utilization each teacher’s unique talents and education strategies. This is not a school where teachers will feel laden with bureaucratic paperwork. This is a place of learning, where innovative teachers can thrive and contribute to the foundations of the new school.

Set amidst the suburbs of Bangkok, RAS is a new, modern campus located in Bangna, not far from Suvarnabhumi International Airport, and about 10 minutes from the Udom Suk Sky Train. There are many Western restaurants and large shopping malls, but without all the traffic and pollution of downtown Bangkok. An apartment in Bangna will range from 5k-15k THB per month.

Raffles American School is a member of the Raffles Education Group, Ltd., South East Asia´s largest education group. Raffles has been building schools around the world for 30 years, so you can be assured that we maintain standards of quality. Raffles American School has had the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) do their initial visit of the school and plans to join the East Asian Regional Council of Schools. In the coming years, we will open to Grade 12 and offer AP courses. We still have many acres of land to expand our facilities.

We have a diverse population of students from all over the world with different learning needs. Most of the students are from affluent families, but our reasonable tuition prices allow for the emerging middle class to attend an international school. Some students will be coming from the local school system, while others will be coming from a school with Western education standards. Those students that do not meet our minimum English requirements will be taught in separate "sheltered-content instruction” classrooms until they are ready to be mainstreamed.

As all of our 240 students are new to the school, teachers will need to differentiate their teaching strategies to accommodate their different educational backgrounds while still centering the classes around the same targeted learning outcomes. Raffles American School follows Common Core Standards as grade level learning targets and uses MAP adaptive assessments to measure individual improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are currently recruiting for a Preschool teacher (students ages 3-4). Applicants should have an Early Childhood Education Credential/ Child Development Associate Degree, or be a licensed Child Care Provider/Elementary Educator. Equivalent credentials are accepted, but these must be transferable to American credentials.

The position commences on the 2nd of January 2019, with the 7th of January being the first day of class. Preschool classes start at 8:30am and end at 2:30pm. A Preschool class usually has 14 to 17 students. Each class will have a teaching assistant and a nanny. Specialist teachers (e.g. Thai, Chinese, Music, P.E.) provide ample break for Homeroom teachers during the day. There are approximately 191 school days during the year, and teachers are paid in full every month of their contract.

RAS tries to take care of our teaching staff with a competitive compensation package. The selected candidate will be reimbursed for airfare to Thailand after they commence teaching, and return airfare upon completion of their contract. Visa and work-permit expenses will be reimbursed by RAS. Medical, accident, disability, and life insurance are also provided. A catered lunch is provided for preschool teachers and their students. RAS has a helpful and welcoming team of professionals to support our teachers.

Ajarn

Ajarn.com was started as a small hobby website in 1999 by Ian McNamara. It was a simple way for one Bangkok teacher to share his Thailand experiences and pass on advice. The website developed a loyal and enthusiastic following. In 2004, Ian handed over the reins to Phil Williams and 'Bangkok Phil' has run the ajarn website ever since.
